Yesterday was the opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeong Chang, Korea. The overall theme of the ceremony besides technology was peace and hope as North and South Korea united for the winter games. The ceremony featured 2,900 athletes from roughly 90 nations. The technology advanced stadium was built specifically for the winter games and the displays throughout the ceremony was mind blowing. The stadium combines various circles, squares and triangles geometric forms which represent heaven, earth and mankind. Throughout the entire ceremony there were elaborate digital and light displays along with fireworks plus several different regional dance performances that included fire.
One of the touching moments was when all the teams walked into the stadium and viewers got to see the individual countries teams waving their individual flags. For the list of the flagbearers for the 91 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the Olympic Athlete from Russia delegation click here.
Another great moment was when both South Korea and North Korea teams come out as one united country and under one flag.
One of the most hilarious moments of teams walking onto the stadium field is when the USA team walked out the stadium was playing Gangnam Style. There was definitely some dancing going on when Gangnam Style came on except for Vice President Pence who attended the opening ceremony.
Intel lighted up the sky with around 1,000 “Shooting Star” drones on a delayed broadcast for viewers. Here is a behind the scenes preview look at Intel’s shooting star drones that were part of the opening ceremony.
After a 101-day journey the torch relay finished at the open ceremony. The flame was carried up what seemed to be a never-ending set of stairs and delivered to South Korean figure skater Yuna Kim, who won a gold medal in 2010 and silver in 2014. The caldron lighting for the ceremony was impressive. Yuna Kim skated on a small sheet of ice high above the crowd to light the caldron. The caldron was a massive structure that had what seemed like a tall fire apparatus that expanded to light the very top of the caldron.
The 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeong Chang will be continue till February 25th. Congratulations to USA’s first Gold Medalist, Red Gerard, who won the first gold medal for 2018 Olympics in men’s snowboard slopestyle at the age of 17!
